FAQ About Muffle Furnaces
The first number in the product name of Nabertherm furnaces usually indicates the volume in liters. Standard muffle furnace sizes range from one liter to 60 liters. You can find the exact internal and external dimensions under the "Technical Data" tab on the product pages of the Nabertherm website.
The second number in the product name of Nabertherm furnaces usually indicates the maximum temperature. Standard muffle furnaces reach a maximum temperature of 1100 °C or 1200 °C.
For a longer service life of the heating elements and insulation, the continuous operating temperature should be approximately 100 °C below the maximum temperature. For higher temperatures, Nabertherm offers brick-insulated muffle furnaces in several standard sizes up to 1300 °C, as well as a fiber-insulated version up to 1400 °C.
Nabertherm muffle furnaces up to 1200 °C and with a maximum temperature of 1400 °C are fiber-insulated. It is particularly important to note that all insulation materials used are not classified as carcinogenic according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP).
Muffle furnaces for maximum temperatures of 1300 °C are insulated with high-quality lightweight firebricks. These withstand the high-temperatures and retain heat in the furnace chamber as effectively as possible. These insulation materials are also not classified as carcinogenic.
High-quality and well-sealed insulation is particularly important for temperature uniformity in the furnace chamber and low energy consumption. Nabertherm muffle furnaces achieve a temperature uniformity of up to +/- 5 K in the empty workspace. The workspace dimensions are smaller than the furnace chamber and can also be found in the technical data on the Nabertherm website.
Interaction between the heating elements and the batch should be avoided as much as possible. Furthermore, high-quality materials are essential for durability and low wear. Since heating elements are wear parts, their easy replacement is also of great importance.
In Nabertherm muffle furnaces up to 1200 °C, high-quality heating wires are embedded in ceramic plates, providing optimal protection against mechanical damage or interaction with the batch. The heating plates are easy to replace. Heating from two or three sides (depending on the model) enables a temperature uniformity of up to +/- 5 K in the empty workspace. If a particularly fast heating time is required, Nabertherm offers muffle furnaces up to 1100 °C in the LE... Economy product series. In these models, the heating elements are protected in quartz tubes and radiate heat freely into the furnace chamber.
For simple processes requiring only one temperature, Nabertherm offers a basic controller (R 8) where you simply enter the desired temperature, press "Start," and it's ready to go. This is part of the Economy Series LE.
For more complex temperature profiles, Nabertherm offers standard controllers with up to 5 adjustable programs, each with 4 program steps. The optional C variant, with up to 10 programs and 20 segments, is also available. Input is intuitive via a touchscreen display with clear text readouts. Nabertherm controllers feature integrated help functionality in 24 languages.
In the standard configuration, the Nabertherm muffle furnace operates in ambient air. With a simple optional upgrade (protective gas connection and gas supply system), the muffle furnace can be purged with non-flammable process gases such as N₂ or Ar, creating a reducing atmosphere. The achievable residual oxygen content is typically in the upper single-digit percentage range.
If an atmosphere with a lower oxygen content or vacuum operation is required, Nabertherm offers various alternative furnace models, such as retort furnaces, tube furnaces, or furnaces equipped with gas-tight boxes.
The over-temperature limiter monitors the furnace temperature and switches off the heating system as soon as a previously defined maximum temperature is reached. This protects both the furnace and the load from overheating and potential damage.
The over-temperature limiter is a standard additional equipment for Nabertherm muffle furnaces and can also be retrofitted by a qualified electrician.
Nabertherm muffle furnaces require very little maintenance. In most cases, regular visual inspections and functional checks are sufficient.
The specific maintenance intervals for individual components can be found in the operating instructions of your furnace.
The service life of wear parts such as heating elements and thermocouples varies depending on the process, operating duration, and frequency of use.
Suitable spare parts are available from your laboratory dealer or directly from Nabertherm.
Please have your furnace model and serial number available when making an inquiry. This information can be found on the type plate located on the side of the furnace chamber.
You may also send your request, including the relevant information, by email to spares@nabertherm.de.
If you experience any issues with your Nabertherm furnace, please contact your preferred laboratory dealer or reach out to Nabertherm service via our website or by email at service@nabertherm.de.
We recommend connecting your furnace to an exhaust duct system and safely routing the exhaust gases away.
Further information on exhaust gas routing can be found here: Exhaust Systems | Nabertherm.
Always follow the detailed instructions provided in your furnace operating instructions.
For the exhaust air, a maximum temperature of approximately 200 °C up to 300 °C should be assumed.
Please take care of the detailed information in the operating instructions of your furnace.
When installing the furnace, observe the following safety requirements:
The furnace must be installed in a dry room in accordance with the safety instructions.
The table or support surface must be level.
The furnace must be placed on a non-combustible surface (fire protection class A according to DIN 4102 – e.g., concrete, construction ceramics, aluminum, or steel).
The load-bearing capacity of the support surface must be sufficient for the weight of the furnace, including accessories.
The operator is responsible for ensuring adequate ventilation at the installation site through a suitable exhaust and fresh air supply system.
A minimum safety clearance of 0.5 m on all sides and 1 m above the furnace must be maintained with combustible materials.

The furnace insulation and/or the heating plates inside the furnace (depending on the furnace model) are made of high-quality refractory material. Due to thermal expansion, cracks may appear in the insulation and, in some cases, also in the heating plates after a few heating cycles. These cracks are normal, as the insulation expands when exposed to high temperatures, and they do not affect the furnace's performance, functionality, or quality.
Heat the empty furnace to 1050 °C (1920 °F) at a heating rate of 150 °C/h. Maintain this temperature for one hour. Afterwards, allow the muffle furnace to cool down naturally.
For LE models: Heat the furnace directly to 1000 °C (1820 °F) without a controlled heating ramp. Maintain this temperature for one hour. Afterwards, allow the furnace to cool down naturally.
The Nabertherm muffle furnace is a standard product that is manufactured in large production volumes. As a rule, it is not calibrated before delivery.
Upon request, the furnace’s thermocouple can be calibrated for an additional charge, depending on the type of thermocouple installed.
The temperature uniformity in Nabertherm muffle furnaces is ±5 K within the empty usable chamber according to DIN 17052-1 at working temperatures above 800 °C (1472 °F).
Nabertherm muffle furnaces in the L series are equipped with a drop-down flap door that opens downward.
The LT series models feature a lifting door, with the hot side facing away from the operator, providing added convenience and safety during loading and unloading.
The LE muffle furnace series is the economy version. Thanks to its excellent price-performance ratio and fast heating rates, these models are ideal for processes that require only a single set temperature.
In contrast, the L(T) models are equipped with an intuitive touchscreen controller that supports multiple programs and program segments. The LE series features a much simpler controller, allowing only a single temperature to be set.
As a result, programs with heating ramps and holding times are not possible with the economy version (LE), whereas the L(T) models offer full programmable control for more advanced thermal processes.
The available exhaust chimney options can be found on the Nabertherm website: Chimneys | Nabertherm
This accessory can also be retrofitted later if required.
The LV(T) furnace series is specifically designed for laboratory ashing applications up to 1050 °C (1922 °F) and features an integrated exhaust system.
A specially engineered air intake and exhaust system provides more than six air exchanges per minute, ensuring a constant supply of oxygen for the ashing process. The incoming air is preheated, which helps maintain excellent temperature uniformity despite the high air exchange rate.
By comparison, the L(T) series is a standard muffle furnace and does not include this specialized integrated ventilation system for ashing applications.
The maximum load weight of organic materials for the LV(T) models can be found in the technical data on our website.
